Things to know before getting a folding bike

Getting a foldable bike has its ups as well as its downs. So before you get one, consider the following about foldable bicycles.

Space saver
Unlike regular bicycles, folding bikes are obviously more convenient to store and lug around. Since most foldable models can fit easily in the back of a regular sedan, it takes up very little parking and storage space. Not to mention, you don’t have to get a rack in order to bring it along to a trail. You can simply fold it, put it inside the trunk of your car, and go.

Less costly
Despite the convenience that it brings, folding bike models usually cost less than regular full suspension mountain bikes or road bikes. This makes it a good choice for a beginner especially if you have a tight budget. However, it does not offer the same comfort or agility as a full suspension trailer.

Limited design
Because of its structure, folding bicycles can only take on limited designs. Extra hinges in the body add weight to the whole frame and demand heavier metal components instead of pure carbon fiber. This makes it difficult to create a road or racer folding bike. Usually, folding designs are meant to be used for uphill climbs, downhill rides, or the usual cross training. Because in these types of rides, weight and bike design are secondary to the rider’s skills.

If you have considered all these and you still want to get one, then a folding bike is really for you.

Safety Home Tips for the Elderly

I have always likened elderly people to babies and toddlers. Whenever I would come across friends who need to take care of an ailing grandparent, I would always tell them to have lots of patience and to “elderly”-proof their home too. Elderly people are not as agile as they used to be and most often than not, their reflexes are now slowed down. They are more prone to accidents. That’s why keeping a safe home should be the priority.

A home should always have a first aid kit and blood pressure monitor. Elderly people are also prone to get sick because their immune system is no longer that strong, so it best to have air purifiers in their home to keep allergens and viruses at bay. You also need to check if the furnace filters are working properly to maintain a warm temperature for them.

There are a lot of safety products for the home that you can get. Not all of them might be useful for your household so it will always be better if you ask first. At SafetyHomeProducts.com, they have a segment in their site called Ask Barbara – Barbara Staib, President of Safe Home Products, is an expert on child safety, emergency preparedness, pet training and even pest control. She has personally helped thousands of customers since SHP started in 1999. Ask her questions!

Saving Water: Dual Flush Toilets

imageWith all the crazy weather changes we have been experiencing as of late, I have become more aware that global warming is no joke. I still have kids who are young and I want to give them the gift of environment when we go. Little steps go a long way. For example, investing on a dual flush toilet will actually save water in the long run. And aren’t we supposed to conserve energy and natural resources as much as we can?

Dual Flush toilets handle solid and liquid waste differently from standard American style toilets, giving the user a choice of flushes. It’s an interactive toilet design that helps conserve water that has caught on quickly in countries where water is in short supply, like Australia, and in areas where water supply and treatment facilities are older or overtaxed. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reports that by the year 2013, an estimated 36 states will experience water shortages as a result of increased water usage and inefficient water management from aging regional infrastructures. Using less water to flush liquid waste makes sense, but in the United States there may be cultural biases that make accepting a more hands-on approach to personal waste harder to accept

Organic Farming – Is it For You?

I have previously written about recycling and how you can take it a step further. Since April is the month for Earth Day, I find it would be apt for me to impart some information about taking care of your own produce – yes, the ones you buy and ultimately eat.

Over the years, most state officials are extending support for the local market where organic farmers sell their own produce. Organic farming methods replace the chemical fertilizers and pesticides with natural methods of food cultivation. National News Today reports that Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) has become a popular way for consumers to buy local, seasonal food directly from a farmer. Can you imagine getting farm direct organic apples like the organic fruit of the monthWashington organic apples, from a seller who is directly responsible for making it grow?

It seems you would be given the opportunity to be able to know that your food is in good hands :)

The only form of exercise I get everyday is when I surf the virtual waves on the web and the only muscles I have in my body are at the fingertips.

I write all I can find on the web when I surf while sipping my coffee.
