Saving Water: Dual Flush Toilets

imageWith all the crazy weather changes we have been experiencing as of late, I have become more aware that global warming is no joke. I still have kids who are young and I want to give them the gift of environment when we go. Little steps go a long way. For example, investing on a dual flush toilet will actually save water in the long run. And aren’t we supposed to conserve energy and natural resources as much as we can?

Dual Flush toilets handle solid and liquid waste differently from standard American style toilets, giving the user a choice of flushes. It’s an interactive toilet design that helps conserve water that has caught on quickly in countries where water is in short supply, like Australia, and in areas where water supply and treatment facilities are older or overtaxed. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reports that by the year 2013, an estimated 36 states will experience water shortages as a result of increased water usage and inefficient water management from aging regional infrastructures. Using less water to flush liquid waste makes sense, but in the United States there may be cultural biases that make accepting a more hands-on approach to personal waste harder to accept

Save Water – now, before it’s too late!

My Blog is Carbon Neutral!

If your biggest problem is how to get rid of blackheads and what shoe to wear today, there are people saving the environment, one tree at a time.

And now thanks to brilliant and caring people, you can now save the environment, even by blogging. Imagine saving the world by planting trees, one blog post at a time.

Organic Farming – Is it For You?

I have previously written about recycling and how you can take it a step further. Since April is the month for Earth Day, I find it would be apt for me to impart some information about taking care of your own produce – yes, the ones you buy and ultimately eat.

Over the years, most state officials are extending support for the local market where organic farmers sell their own produce. Organic farming methods replace the chemical fertilizers and pesticides with natural methods of food cultivation. National News Today reports that Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) has become a popular way for consumers to buy local, seasonal food directly from a farmer. Can you imagine getting farm direct organic apples like the organic fruit of the monthWashington organic apples, from a seller who is directly responsible for making it grow?

It seems you would be given the opportunity to be able to know that your food is in good hands :)

Taking Recycling to Another Level

The Earth is not only experiencing the worst climate change ever due to global warming, it is also facing a more dreaded nightmare: the depletion of natural resources and filling up on landfills due to overwhelming garbage. Modernization can do wonders and yet it has brought the worst destruction to the environment. The air-conditioners, smoke from machines, plastic misuse and overuse – the list is endless.

Governments from different countries have taken recycling and an awareness to the environment to the national attention. Recycling and garbage segregation have been signed into laws.

How can we take it to another level? You can take garbage segregation to another level. You can sell plastic to factories and use the green bag (biodegradable items) for compost.

Is it really worth starting your own compost pile? Wouldn’t you simply be creating a smelly eyesore that would be nothing more than a glorified trash dump?

You heard me. Starting a compost pile in your own yard, even a small one, would not only benefit your family’s health with the food you eat but the world you live in in the long run. Not to mention it doesn’t even need to smelly. Manufacturers have garden composter bins out that do all the decomposing for you. You just need to put all your leftover food scraps and other organic material and it turns automatically and you will have your nutrient-rich fertilizer in no time. It is a good time to try growing your own vegetables in your yard too. It if won’t work for you, flowering plants will be good too. Anything that will help the earth have more greens is better! Adding compost to your soil will help aeration and water-management for both clay and sandy soils. Micro-organisms will feed on your compost and in turn provide nitrogen, potassium and phosphorous. Create a rich, dark soil for your plants and they will grow strong, healthy and robust.

Convinced? Try cultivating a Worm Farm! Adding worms to your compost pile makes for faster decomposition, not to mention that these worms introduce more beneficial nutrients into the soil. Ultimately, you get the best bargain because you end up with healthier plants, you save on fertilizer costs and you become a more responsible citizen of Earth. They also help keep your compost bin odor-free. You just need to make sure that you use the red worms (the ones the burrow into the soil) and use two lbs of worms for every one lb of food scraps!

The best thing about having a worm farm is that you can do so at virtually any place in and outside the house! There is no need to worry about unpleasant smells and unwelcome insects just as long you can properly maintain the compost pile.

As our world faces water shortages and water crises in almost every country, using a composting toilet continue to gain popularity as a water-saving alternative to traditional toilets. There are many convincing reasons to make the switch.

1. Do you know the waste flushed out of our toilets is 90% water? Multiply that by how many times a household uses the toilet and multiply it again with a trillion houses all over the world and you will see the water shortage crisis is no joke.

2. Composting toilets may sound scary (or icky) but it is very sanitary, very easy to use and maintain too. These evaporate the liquid part of wastes and the solid part is turned into salts or crystals which can be fertilizers too.

3. One of the biggest pros to modern composting toilets is that they’re designed in such a way that the homeowner does not have to come into contact with the waste until it is fully composted. That solves the problem to everyone’s first hesitation!

That is reuse, reduce and recycle REALLY for each one of us.

Bloom and Grow

I want to try new things this year and one of them is to be able to make things grow. In short, I want to be able to take care of a plant, let it grow and bloom. As of the moment I am leaning towards planting seeds for vegetables. God knows how much we need more veggies in the house. So I am on the lookout for Planters. I want my little experiment boxed in so I have more control on the soil (and I can move them around). Outdoor Planters and Garden Planters are high on my list.

Will this do?

The reason why I haven’t considered flowering plants is because I am so scared they would just wilt and die. Plus, my flowers in their Indoor Planters run a high risk of getting plucked out by my daughter everyday. Window Box Planters might work but definitely not those High End Planters:

Isn’t that picture the most enticing thing? Now if only I can blooms like that as well.

My aunt has a green thumb and she can make anything bloom under her care. She makes such pretty arrangements too. She invests on Decorative Planters  because she gives them away as gifts quite often. Wouldn’t you want to receive lovely blooms in a Decorative Planter?

Go Green. Plant Green

imageWith global warming being felt worldwide, we are suffering from the misuse of the environment. Unpredictable weather changes, floods, drought and severe climate changes are just a few of the things we are experiencing right now. Fortunately, governments and citizens are becoming increasingly aware of everything and are trying to launch projects to save whatever is left of the environment. The question is  – will it work? Would it have an effect? Is it too late?

The Reuse. Reduce. Recycle. program has been launched and several local city governments are using it in full force. In certain communities, if garbage is not segregated, there will be no garbage collection.

Plant Green = Plant Trees is a program launched by mountain side municipalities as well. For low-lying lands with scarce water supply, a vegetable and tree Ooze Tube would be a useful tool.

1. Works with multi-stems & conifers.
2. Water weaning – it teaches tree to live on its own!
3. Low cost, re-useable and repairable.
4. Readily adaptable to remote installation.
5. Allows air circulation from stem to soil.
6. Reduces hand watering labor by more than two thirds.
