College Survival Tips

I always stress how education is the best gift parents can ever give to their children. Money and material things can be taken away but what they learn in school will never be taken away from them – the knowledge and wisdom they have acquired and the habits and discipline school has inculcated in them will be their primary weapons to face life and deal with problems and struggles along the way.

My eldest will be going to high school next school year. Five or six years from now, he will be in college and will be overloaded with schoolwork and lessons that he might help from a custom essay writing service to be able to turn in tasks on time. Not only just turning in tasks on time, these school assignments should be of high quality too, one that can get them good grades.

What I am proud of my kids is that they have good study habits. As young as they are, they already have study habits formed. When they arrive home from school, after eating some snacks, they would hit the books first before turning on the TV or play with friends or their toys. And I don’t need to remind them of this. It is good to form habits when they are still young. I believe it will save you a lot of headache in the future.

Time management is also something I try to teach them. This is hard for me since I struggle with this too. Knowing when to stop, trying not to jampack one’s schedule and not do multiple things at once are few of the things I try not to pass to them but I am afraid I have, especially with my oldest.

When they reach college, I have a few tips for them:

1. It’s all about choosing your priorities. College will give you freedom to choose – which classes you are going to attend, whether you want to attend class or not, which ones to drop out from. It would be nice if you already have the concept of doing the right thing even if it isn’t the easiest thing to do.

2. Choose your friends. They either help make or break you.

3. Invest on a good network of teachers that can serve as mentors and friends that can help you get a job after college. One of the things I’ve wished I did when I was in college was to form more friendships instead of sticking with my closest friends.

College is a great time to discover yourself. This is where I found myself and formed the strongest friendships. I hope my kids do too.

Tutoring Service: Teaching Study Habits

I believe it is more important to inculcate good study habits than have kids be pressured into having good or high grades. Instilling the values of discipline, motivation and diligence is more important than just letting your children be as long as they have good grades. As they say, start the habit first and the rest will follow. This is the reason I am training my youngest child to learn on her own and study, even just 30 minutes a day, even on a holiday. I recently signed her up to a tutorial center to help her with reading and in as short as six months, she has shown such tremendous improvement when it comes to her reading. Her therapist told me that she recommends that I do not stop with her tutorials since she needs extra help in reading and the languages. And that is what I am doing.

School Tutoring is something that can really help a child with his studies. Let’s face it, every child has different speeds on catching up with lesson. If a student is behind or not even behind, PSAT Tutors can help him catch up or even advance on his lessons.

A professional tutoring service that has tutors trained in all subject areas will be able to provide the help needed to address your child’s weaknesses. Allowing a tutor to come to your home and provide tutoring services to your child will also be beneficial in that you do not have to drive and take your child to another appointment. Your child is also able to learn in and environment he/she already feels comfortable in.A tutoring service is also an excellent way to prepare your child to take a college entrance exam. Your child can receive SAT/PSAT & Exam Preparation that is designed to equip your child with the knowledge and skills they need to take the SAT with confidence and earn a high score.

Distance Learning Programs

Learning and education has come a long way. Before students need to be in schools, in uniforms and do a lot of traditional book learning to learn. Now, students can come to school dressed the way they want as long as its deemed appropriate by school rules, learn through all forms of multimedia – TV, podcasts, internet and can even study at home thanks to distance learning programs.

Distance learning programs have helped a lot of people, especially those who are older and who have families to take care of, to finish their education and reach for their dreams. There is an online student assessment to take to see if one is qualified but generally distance learning programs in college are almost always open to everybody as long as they can keep up with schoolwork and pass homework in time.

It is certainly not for everybody, since basically you will be left to your own to study. It takes a lot of motivation and discipline to do that. But it’s a worthwhile endeavor to finally get a degree!

Teach and Learn.

I talked with friend from high school last week and I found out she is now a teacher. She told me how ironic she is now teaching when she was the one who despised classroom learning during high school. She was always the one who advocated learning through the “school of life”. Now she is on the third of her five planned teaching degrees. She loves to learn – and she has chosen to teach so she can learn endlessly. She will be getting teaching degrees online. Thanks to technology, learning from home is doable! I wish her luck!

I am about to turn in for the night so I would not be able to blog more. But here are some of the things you can expect from me this week:
1. Movie: Diary of a Wimpy Kid 2
2. Movie: Lemonade Mouth (Disney)
3. Green Lantern
4. TV Series: Supernatural
5. Movie: Hangover
